Negotiation is not limited to business meetings or large financial agreements. We negotiate in everyday lifeโ€”at work, within our families, while shopping, when requesting support and whenever we try to reach an agreement with another person.

At Saviour Empowerment CIC, we recently explored several practical principles for successful negotiation. Our sessions helped participants understand that good negotiation is not about defeating another person. It is about communicating effectively, understanding different needs and working towards an outcome that is fair and beneficial.

Important Negotiation Tips

Some of the practical lessons we discussed included:

  • Prepare before entering a negotiation.
  • Understand what you want to achieve.
  • Listen carefully to the other person.
  • Ask clear and respectful questions.
  • Remain calm and control your emotions.
  • Communicate confidently without becoming aggressive.
  • Focus on the issue rather than attacking the person.
  • Be willing to consider reasonable alternatives.
  • Know when to pause or walk away.
  • Confirm the final agreement clearly.

Participants were encouraged to use simple examples from everyday life, such as negotiating working hours, resolving a disagreement, discussing responsibilities or requesting a better price.

One important lesson was that effective negotiation requires both confidence and respect. People should be able to express their needs without being intimidated, while also recognising the concerns and dignity of others.

Through practical learning like this, Saviour Empowerment CIC is helping people develop communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills that can be used in their homes, workplaces, businesses and communities.

We look forward to providing more practical workshops that help people become confident, informed and prepared for everyday opportunities.
